Thank You To My Readers and Referred Members

And why you should consider becoming a Medium member, too

Hello there, dear reader. Thank you for being here.

I appreciate that you spend time reading my work. I pour my heart into the articles I write here on Medium, and every comment, clap, and follow means the world to me. Seriously — thank you for being here.

I don’t write on Medium for the money. I am fortunate that when I first joined this platform two years ago, I did very well. I made money at a time when I was struggling to find better than minimum-wage jobs. I wrote because I wanted to, but also because the income truly did make a difference in my life.

Last December, I was working three part-time jobs. I worked in an office three days a week, in retail as a holiday seasonal employee two days a week, and squeezed in a couple hours at a horse stable mucking stalls and bucking hay anywhere inbetween. When I found the time, I wrote on Medium too. It was tough, but I scraped by.

This December is so very different. I have a fantastic full-time job where I feel fairly compensated and I get to do what I love for a living. It feels like a privilege to be able to write on Medium in addition to that. Medium has changed the way it pays writers, and as a result, I make a fraction of what I used to on this platform.

But I don’t mind at all — as a result of the change in how Medium pays, I’m more focused on the craft of writing rather than writing in the hope of earning something. With this shift in my goals, I’ve transitioned to writing about what I truly love. I am hoping you will love it too.

Medium’s new focus is on referred members. When you become a Medium member through my referral link, I receive a portion of your monthly membership as compensation for my writing. To me, this is an amazing system because not only are you supporting me, your reads as a member will compensate any writer whose work you spend time reading.

Isn’t that awesome? While you’re reading, you’re actively supporting writers on this platform. And you’re supporting me, which is so sweet and lovely I still feel elated when I look at the names of my referred members. I only have two so far, but when I got the notifications for them, my heart jumped for joy!

It feels amazing to know someone took the step to become a Medium member because of me. I feel good about it not because it means I have a loyal reader, but because there is such great writing on Medium by so many little-known writers. This website is one of my favorite places to spend time, because the articles I find here resonate with me. I learn new things, explore new perspectives, find like-minded people, and make new friends (and nemeses).

That’s why I enjoy referring new members to Medium. Not just because these referalls make me a few dollars a month, which I call my “coffee cash”, but because I know how worthwhile it is to be a member. For only $5, you get unlimited access to the absolute wealth of articles on this website, and your reads support the writers. I’ve been a member for the two years I’ve been writing on Medium! I stopped my membership a couple times, then inevitably came back when I kept running into the paywall. I just couldn’t stop reading.

If you’ve been on the fence about becoming a Medium member, why not try it for the month of December? Join below with my affiliate link, and if you don’t like it, you don’t have to renew. But I think you’re going to like it.

For my readers who aren’t members or aren’t a member through me, I deeply appreciate you and am so happy to have connected. Whether or not you’re a Medium member, I would love to hear from you in the comments below. How long have you been on Medium? Are you a member, and if so, do you enjoy it? If you’re not, what’s keeping you from trying it out?

On that note, I want to wish you all a very happy holiday season. Cheers to the end of another year writing on Medium, and cheers to whatever next year may bring!
