I didn't realize this article would resonate with me so much. I was raised in an affluent area with many privileged friends, and was myself fairly privileged, until I moved states at 20 with my then boyfriend/now husband and we barely scraped by while getting settled. We're doing so much better now but it's entirely dependent on our current jobs. My friends usually can't relate to the idea of surviving on paychecks. We don't take vacations, though as of recently we've started indulging in our hobbies more. But we still joke about when canned fruit was a treat back when we lived out of the dollar store! It's tough when other people can't relate.
